Graft versus Host Disease (GvHD): Analysis of participating T-cells

Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation represents one of the most important treatments of leukaemia. However, with the transplantation of these stem cells not only the function for haematopoiesis, but also a "foreign" immune system is transmitted to the recipient. As a consequence severe immunological complications can occur after transplantation which are summarized as "Graft versus Host disease" (GvHD). Throughout GvHD donor-derived T-cells recognize recipient tissue and organs as "foreign" which trigger inflammatory processes. So far, no prediction techniques for the appearance or the intensity of GvHD after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation could be developed.

Our project aims at bridging this gap by analyzing the T-cell receptor repertoire as well as the gene expression of the GvHD participating T-cells in order to resolve the biology of GvHD and to identify markers for an improved prognosis of GvHD.
